Welcome

Thanks for checking out Canvas! Take a look around our website. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us. You are more than welcome to join us for one of our Sunday evening worship services or mid-week community groups as well.

History

About three years ago, there were five of us sitting around a table at a local coffee shop beginning to dream about what a new church in the Montrose area of Houston would look like. In my opinion, Montrose has some of the best of what Houston has to offer. There is so much movement here and so many people that God cares deeply for.

Part of our conversation that day dealt with the stereotype of the church as the voice of censorship in culture and its role in limiting the free expression of ideas in society as a whole. Our conversation centered around the Genesis story and the idea that when God created human beings in his likeness, the two things that we know about him at that point are that God is, at the core of being, creative and that he is powerful enough to accomplish the work of creation. This spurred a lot of conversation about how the church could encourage people to be creative and free in their expression of worship to God. This creativity could be expressed through, but not limited to, art, music, craft, the free expression of ideas, questions and opinions…even if those ideas and opinions differ from others in the community. Part of the beauty of the Christian community is that sometimes the only thing that we have in common is a trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that is enough to bring us together.

Over time, God has grown, formed and molded this vision, but at its core this is still what we strive for at Canvas. So this is an open invitation. It is an invitation to ask questions. It is an invitation to come and to figure out whether or not you believe any of this Jesus stuff. It is an invitation to bring your gifts to the feet of the Lord in worship without someone saying that they aren’t quite right by someone else’s standards. Love generously. Give freely. Live compassionately. Join the Movement…

Mission

Our mission is to develop a dynamic, creative community of people that live lives of deep devotion to Jesus and participate in God’s mission in the world, which results in the continual formation of new discipling communities.

What to Expect

Worship at Canvas differs slightly from week to week, but you can always expect time for reflection and prayer, some sort of teaching, primarily in the form of preaching and open discussion, and a reading from scripture. We also take Communion each Sunday in remembrance of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

What should I wear?

Wear what you are comfortable in. We want you to feel at home, and one of our primary values is authenticity.

Is there anything I should bring?

If you own a bible, we would encourage you to bring it with you. If you like to take notes, you are welcome to bring a pen and paper. If you prefer cool new technology, there are tons of bible apps for phones on various platforms. We recommend the YouVersion app.

I’m not a Christian

You are absolutely welcome. Our worship service provides a safe space for you to explore your beliefs about and understanding of God. Feel free to ask questions, offer an alternative point of view, or just take things in.

I have kids

Bring them! We have an exciting program for kids ages birth to 3rd grade that includes singing, a craft, a bible lesson and a snack.

What about older kids and teenagers?

Our worship service is a great experience for all ages. We believe that it is important for older kids to learn to participate in a multi-generational worship setting.

What time should I get there?

Our worship service begins at 11 am. Weekly worship is deeply important because it allows us not only to carve out time to devote to our Creator and Sustainer, but also because it allows us to build friendships and become partners in ministry. From the welcome to the closing prayer our worship service lasts about an hour, so you can expect us to wrap up by 12:00 pm.

Where should I park?

You are welcome to park in the Interfaith Ministries parking lot (entrance on Lovett) or the curb cut parking along the northbound side of Montrose Blvd.

During Lent this year we have been looking at the wilderness passages in scripture. Teaching this series has been a real blessing to me, and I am looking forward to hearing what Caleb Cameron has to say this coming Sunday.
